Orphanage
Pastor Hanfere Aligaz & Pastor Yetenayet Hailewith the Joshua Academy Kids
In order to address the problem of the increasing number of orphans living in the streets of Ethiopia, in 2001, IEEC founded the Joshua Academy in Debre Ziet, Ethiopia. After starting with only 10 children, the orphanage grew to 72 children ages 3 to 13, and provides the children with food, clothing, healthcare, and most importantly education.
Having recently acquired additional property grounds for the orphanage, the church currently has plans to expand the orphanage to accept more children. The Ethiopian government provided this land grant, allowing the relocation of the orphanage and the construction of a community school, KG-Year 9. We hope to expand this to provide Year 10 and beyond high school.
Our goal is to provide as many orphans as possible with a safe home and nurturing environment where they can obtain quality education and become successful members of their communities. 2011 and continue to expand from there, resources permitting. Additionally, the Academy provides partial support to over 600 students enrolled in the school on our new premises.
Joshua AcademyThe Academy's Dormotries:
Currently our facility can accommodate 108 children. It has six fully furnished apartments each with three bedrooms, a kitchen, four bathrooms and three showers. Each bedroom contains three sets of bunk beds, sleeping a total of six per room. In trying to provide family-style environments the children are placed on set schedules.
Discipline is established through:
- Matron assigned to each apartment
- Balanced and nutritious meals for the children are prepared in their individual apartments and served together
- Fully furnished sitting/dining area for family-style interaction.

The Joshua Academy School was created in recognition of the importance of providing a sound education and skills to reintegrate the children into society. In the last year, the school has added a new library facility and 2 science laboratories, to increase the quality of education that it provides to the children and the community. We will continue to expand to include high school education, while working on continuing to bring up the quality of the education that we provide.
Holistic Living:
Running an orphanage is an expensive venture and our plans for expansion are dependent on what we are able to raise. So in hopes of offsetting some costs and promoting self-sufficiency, the academy has allocated some land for growing
crops, raising cows for dairy, and a vegetable garden as well. As water in Debre Zeit is in short supply and high demand, we have dug out our own wells to obtain clean water for the dormitories, the school and all other needs ithin our facility. We also provide assistance and education to other members of the community, promoting their own
holistic living and teaching them about farming, tending their own gardens, raising dairy cows, digging wells for their own water supplies, and basic sanitation in everyday life.
Pressing Needs:
The biggest need we have is you financial support. We need to:
- Expand the school to provide high school and to accommodate additional students
- Increase staff to care for, and teach the additional kids we will be taking in
- Build additional dormitories
- Provide food, clothes, medical care, bedding and toiletries utilities
- Maintainance of our facilities
- School supplies, games, films and other educational materials
